Everest

In 2004, two years after he climbed Mt Everest for the seventh time, American mountaineering legend Peter Athans took part in a charitable cataract operation project in northern Nepal that changed the lives of nearly 300 beneficiaries.
Today, the event has led to a stupendous discovery that, once fully understood, could throw light on one of the oldest religions in the world, its link with India and the connection between Tibetan and Zoroastrian death rites.
“I made a lot of friends during the eye camp,” says Athans, better known worldwide as ‘Mr Everest’ for his ascents as well as efforts to rescue endangered climbers during the black year of 1996, when 15 people died while attempting the world’s highest peak.
“Some of them took me to a cluster of (man-made) caves that remain hidden from the human eye due to the height and the difficulty to get inside… There was no knowledge of who created the caves and I thought this was an intriguing mystery, worthy of further research and discussion,” Athans said.

Itinerary of Everest Base Camp Trek

Fly to Lukla, ascends to Phakding (2611m) 5 hours.
 Namche (3440m).
Follow the Bhote Koshi, through forest and pasture land, along a valley dotted small Sherpa settlements. Cross the Bhote Koshi and steep climb to Namche Bazaar. Everest (8848m) and Lhotse (8516m) come into sight. Thamserku (6623m) and Kwangde (6011m) loom to the east and west and the sacred mountain Khumbilla (5707m) dominates the skyline to the north behind the village. Traverse westwards with view of Kwangde (6011m) and the waterfalls cascading off its flanks. Follow Bhote Koshi as trail goes high its bank through yellow and white rhododendron forest (in full bloom in May). Cross river, look back down valley for beautiful views of Thamserku (6623m) and Kusum Kanguru (63657m) Climb up through rhododendron forest to pasture lands in front of village of Thame. The secluded village is the birthplace of Tenzing Norgay, who first climbed the Mt. Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary (six hours). The trail descends from Khumjung with chorten framing a dramatic view of Amadablam (6812m) and Kangtega (6779m) Descend from Tangboche and again cross the Imja Khola then side hill gradually to Pangboche. An interesting Gompa site above the main village. The trekkers are in the midst of the Himalayas here, with spectacular views all around. Bungee Jumping

Everest base camp Trek provides you great opportunity to have unique experience. If you have ever longed to set eyes on our highest summit then this exciting trek in the Everest region gives you the opportunity to fulfil a dream, while taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Himalaya. Ever since the days of early climbing expeditions, the 8848m mountain has had a lure of its own, drawing climbers to scale it and trekkers to gaze on its icy faces. Naturally, the trail to the base camp of the mountain has become one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, yet few people return from the trek unmoved by the experience of being right in among the highest peaks in the world.

We fly kathmandu to Lukla, and the adventure begins as we land at its tiny airstrip. We spend several days trekking through the homelands of the Sherpa people, among their villages and Buddhist monasteries, with distant views of Everest and neighbouring Ama Dablam, considered by many to be among the most beautiful mountains in Nepal. A day is spent at Namche Bazaar, the bustling market town in the heart of Sherpa country, and at Pheriche a cluster of houses set among the high summer grazing pastures of the region. These rest days allow time to explore further and to acclimatize, an important factor in your enjoyment of the trek. Those who have fully acclimatized may trek to the Everest Base Camp but without doubt, the highlight for most will be the awe-inspiring views which unfold from the summit of Kala Pattar - the chaotic ice sculptures of the Khumbu Glacier, Nuptse and the south-west face of Everest itself. Not forgetting, of course, the personal sense of achievement that many experience at the end of their trek, when it is all over and we fly back to Kathmandu.

According to eKantipur.com report, the growing number of hotels, increased hotel and international airlines bookings and rising number of international visitors in 2010 are positive indications that the country is likely to receive more tourists than ever.
However, doubts persist among the government authorities and travel trade entrepreneurs as to whether the country would achieve the target of bringing 1 million tourists at a time when the country is reeling under political uncertainty and the shaky peace process.
The ambitious campaign was launched with the hope of attracting at least a million foreign tourists under the public-private- partnership and give a major boost to the country's economy at a time when the country faces slackened tourism.
Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Sharat Singh Bhandari is hopeful that the tourism year will give the desired boost to the country's economy. "Even if the target is not met, the campaign will be a key driver in establishing Nepal as a prime destination," he said at a WTD program on Monday.
There will be two major happenings on Jan. 14, 2011 -- the campaign is slated to be inaugurated the day the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)'s People's Liberation Army is integrated and United Nations Mission in Nepal has been scheduled to go out the same day. "This will be a major achievement in leading the country towards economic prosperity," said Bhandari while addressing the 31st WTD.
